The team hold the meeting and develop the design challenge as part of the ideation and concept development for the further work. This is Ethan and I will introduce the progress the team made.
Step 1: Design Challenge
- Make our site more interesting, enjoyable and attractive
Step 2: HMW Questions
- How might we evoke feelings of happiness in an academic setting?
- How might we add playful elements onto an empty wall?
- How might we connect playful and perform together?
- How might we fully use the site resources? (Movable desks, sofa, white walls, etc.)
- How might we define the size of installation?
Step 3: Think about possible solutions

Step 4: Examine context and constraints
As the result, we decided to choose the idea 4, 5 and 8 as the idea collections.
Idea 4

Context:
People could freely explore/play/perform with the balls with various hand gestures. It could also involve full body interaction if needed.
Constraints:
– People might have problem of initialing the interaction. They might not know how to play with it without observation.
– People might lost interest after one trial.
– The design requires immediate and direct feedback to make the interaction works. If the feedback is delayed due to technical problems, the user experience would be affected significantly.
Textual Justification:
According to our user and site research, it is best if our design could be classified into both performative and allotted interactive installation types. This concept could fit in both, so that different numbers of people could all have fun with it and thus make the Hearth more attractive.
Idea 5

Context:
Two animations, first is pull animations, second is slice animation, furthermore, the pattern can be people’s selfie or other interesting stuff.
Constraints:
– Since it is a projection, the effect might be delayed
– The slice part may not really accurate
– If we’d like to add real time selfies, we need a front camera
– There is a technology concern which is when multi-players pull or slice the cloth at the same time, the team not sure how to solve at this moment
Textual Justification:
According to user research, students hope hearth to become a playable place and are able to relax after heavy studying. This concept can reduce pressure
Idea 8

Context:
The whole topic could be “Garden / Forest”. Initially the elements such as the flowers, trees, etc. are all closed. Once people stand or walk through the site, the elements would be activate and perform in different way.
Constraints:
– The physical installation require the team to manually construct, which might spend a lot of time
– As a physical installation, the variation is limited which might not provide random results.
– It might not attractive for the first impression.
Textual Justification:
According the questionnaire result, not all users wish to stay at our site previously due to some reasons. This installation would provide a enjoyable feelings and attract more people to our site.
Step 5: Refine design challenge
How might we add playful elements onto an empty wall and create more options for user to choose?
How might we define the size of installation by taking into account the the single player and multiplayer experience our design scenes.
