Hello everyone! Its Linda on behalf of Team 05, here is a summary for this week’s studio blog report. After wrapping up and compiling the research for Assessment 1 we have arrived at the following conclusion:
“There are a few considerations we need to address moving forward. One, is identifying which concept of ritual, play, or performance we feel best suits our insights of the space. The dual nature of the space allows it to be used as both a thoroughfare or a plaza depending on the configuration. Our takeaway from this is that it is up to us to determine which territory is more fertile. Do we conform to the baseline layout of thoroughfare and explore the nature of liminal and transitional spaces in our design? Or do we break the existing use pattern and create an entirely new experi-ence? These are all important considerations that we must address as we move forward with our design development.”

Presentation Feedback
After presenting our first assessment, the immediate panel feedback was to think about the conditions working against our site (hearth), for example skylights and traffic flow. The opportunity to factor in the staircase (could have something hanging down); using height and elevations of the space. The panel also suggested that they were open for multiple objects that could be carried around as opposed to having one static installation, we could potentially use many and activate other small areas within our site area. Most importantly, for our next ideation phase, we have to choose a path to take and form a strong case as to why we chose this —going with the flows/movements or disrupting the nature space?
Next Phase
Understanding the use and meaning of a ‘design challenge’ and formulating our own. Then, creating and coming up with multiple concepts to explore and discuss by Week 6 studio class.
Tips from the previous week 5 lecture:
- Appreciate the value of perceiving problems as a design opportunity
- Be imaginative but also be realistic
- Possibilities vs. impossibilities
- Using Brainwriting as design tool for the next ideation phase
